Ranks

Because JG 1 is a German online cyber-squadron, this Unit has adopted the standard Rank system of the World War Two Luftwaffe, as it was used prior to February 1944. This provides the Geschwader with a system of grading seniority and command.

All of JG 1’s ranks can be divided into three basic categories:

Offiziere (Officers)

Within the Offiziere rank group, there are three specific classes: Stabsoffiziere (Field Officers), Hauptleute und Rittmeister (Captains) and Leutnante (Lieutenants).

Oberst (Obst.)

Comparable to an RAF Group Captain, or a USAAF Colonel. This is the rank of JG 1's Geschwaderkommodore.

Oberstleutnant (Obstlt.)

Comparable to an RAF Wing Commander, or a USAAF Lieutenant-Colonel. This is the rank of JG 1's Geschwaderadjutant.

Major (Maj.)

Comparable to an RAF Squadron Leader, or a USAAF Major. This is the rank of a member of JG 1's Geschwaderstab, or a Gruppenkommandeur.

Hauptmann (Hptm.)

Comparable to an RAF Flight Lieutenant, or a USAAF Captain. This is the rank of a Gruppenadjutant.

Oberleutnant (Oblt.)

Comparable to an RAF Flying Officer, or a USAAF 1st Lieutenant. This is the rank of a member of a Gruppenstab, or a Staffelkapitän.

Leutnant (Lt.)

Comparable to an RAF Pilot Officer, or a USAAF 2nd Lieutenant. This is the rank of a Staffeladjutant.

Unteroffiziere (Non-commissioned Officers)

The second rank grouping are the Unteroffiziere (Noncommissioned Officers). German Noncommissioned Officer ranks are traditionally divided into two classes: Unteroffiziere mit Portepee (literally "Junior Officer with Swordknot") or Unteroffiziere ohne Portepee ("Junior Officer without Swordknot").

Stabsfeldwebel (Stabsfw.)

Comparable to an RAF Warrant Officer, or a USAAF Flight Officer. A Stabsfeldwebel often acts as a Schwarmführer, and may be appointed as Hauptfeldwebel (an administrative Senior NCO).

Oberfeldwebel (Obfw.)

Comparable to an RAF Flight Sergeant, or a USAAF Master Sergeant.

Feldwebel (Fw.)

Comparable to an RAF Sergeant, or a USAAF Technical Sergeant.

Unterfeldwebel (Ufw.)

Comparable to a junior non-commissioned officer, with no clear equivalent within the RAF or the USAAF.

Unteroffizier (Uffz.)

Comparable to an RAF Corporal, or a USAAF Staff Sergeant.

Mannschaften (Enlisted)

The final rank group within JG 1 are the Mannschaften (Enlisted men or "Privates"). Roughly following the same basic structure as the U.S. Army Air Force within their flying ranks.

Hauptgefreiter (Hptgefr.)

Comparable to a USAAF Sergeant. There is no clear equivalent within the RAF.

Obergefreiter (Ogfr.)

Comparable to an RAF Leading Aircraftman, or a USAAF Corporal.

Gefreiter (Gefr.)

Comparable to an RAF Aircraftman First Class, or a USAAF Private First Class. This is the rank of a Klasse B Kadett.

Flieger (Flg.)

Comparable to an RAF Aircraftman Second Class, or a USAAF Private. This is the rank of a Klasse A Kadett.
